The Surface Pro is a 2-in-1 tablet with a kickstand and a detachable keyboard, so you can use it as a tablet or as a laptop. The Surface Laptop is a traditional clamshell laptop with a built-in keyboard and a bigger, more stable design for typing. Choose the Pro for portability and pen use, and the Laptop for everyday work.

A Copilot+ PC is a Windows 11 computer with a powerful built-in NPU (neural processing unit) that runs AI features directly on the device. The Snapdragon X2 chips in the new Surface models include an NPU that delivers 80 TOPS of AI performance. This enables faster AI tools for video calls, search, writing and image editing.

The new models switch from the Snapdragon X1 to the Snapdragon X2 chip, which promises up to 53% faster graphics and up to 15.5 hours of battery life on the Surface Pro. Memory can now go up to 64GB. The Surface Pro also gets an optional OLED display with a 120Hz refresh rate.

Microsoft says the Surface Laptop 8th Edition can play local video for up to 20 hours, and the Surface Pro 12th Edition is rated for up to 15.5 hours. Real-life battery life depends on screen brightness, apps and settings, but both are built to last through a full workday.

The Surface Laptop 13.8-inch is the best choice for most students and professionals because it is light, has a built-in keyboard and has long battery life. Choose the Surface Pro if you want a 2-in-1 for note-taking, drawing or travel. Choose the 15-inch Surface Laptop if you want a bigger screen for spreadsheets and multitasking.

Usually, no. The Surface Pro keyboard and Surface Pen are sold separately, so check the product page for what is included before you buy. The Surface Pro works with the Surface Pro Signature and Flex keyboards. A keyboard is needed if you want to use the Surface Pro like a laptop.

Most Windows apps run well, including Microsoft 365, browsers, Teams, Zoom and Adobe apps. Snapdragon Surface devices use Arm processors, and Windows runs older apps through built-in emulation. A few specialized programs, some drivers and certain games may not work, so check your key apps before you buy.
